Isaiah
40:12-31
For some of us,
the phrase, “eternal security,” is packed full of emotion. As a general rule,
this emotion stems from the memory of a past argument or debate. The follow-up
question is: Do you believe in once saved, always saved? This debate is more
often than not caused by an erroneous concept of salvation and usually leads to
fruitless conclusions.
We have all
witnessed someone who once appeared saved, but now does not. The argument from
the one side is that they were never “really” saved but only “appeared” to be
saved. The argument from the other side is that they turned away and lost their
salvation. The problem with this debate is that it is endless and takes us
where no man can go … inside of the heart of another person. In the end, both
sides end up being wrong.
Eternal security
is to be found neither in Scripture nor in the proper interpretation of
Scripture, but rather in the Person of Jesus Christ. “He who has the Son has
life. He who does not have the Son does not have life!” Eternal life is a
relationship with a Person … not merely a dedication to a creed. It is not a
religion, but real life.
It
is our task today, as always, to lift up the Person Who alone can secure
eternal life. When the Holy One of heaven is lifted, men are convicted. When
men become convicted, they turn from sin in repentance and receive life. It is
not probationary life or endless life, but rather eternal life. It is life in a
deeper dimension. Meaning is put in everything. Life is redefined.
Our security is
eternal because of Who He is. The Scriptures reveal a
God different from all other concepts of God. He is a God who is holy, yet
forgiving. He is just, yet merciful. The prophet Isaiah takes us on a tour of
creation and exposes to us a God that exceeds our ability to understand fully.
Our security is
eternal because it is founded in an eternal God Who
alone has the power to cancel sin and secure the future. Our ability to commit
is limited by what we know. His ability to save is not limited by anything. His
power is unmatched and more than impressive. He is our salvation.
Our security is
eternal because of why He redeems us. His redemption is not conditional on our
performance. His forgiveness is given … not earned. It is a gift, not a payment for services
rendered. His gift of eternal life comes to us because of His love and for no
other reason.
He created all
that we know. He sustains all that we see. He entered into the things He had
made. His omnipotent hand gently knocks at your heart’s door. The latch has
been placed by Him on the inside. It is up to you to respond and receive this
priceless gift.
